|Drink or gel 30 minutes before a race?||hirevR|

|I know to eat proteins for two days prior to the night before, past the night before, and no serious eating after the 2 hour count down begins and all but i was a in a nutrition class that said a quick shot of something about 30 minutes before the event would send me in with a glycos reaady to be processed when the stores were depleted. Would a powergel or 16oz of extran be the better choice?|

|Otherwise you'll be standing at the start line with your legs and eyes crossed having to go pee.
I find the effect of gels peaks at roughly 15-20 minutes after taking them, and "crashes" soon afterwards.
The amount of volume will also depend on the race; in a road race you'll typically be pretty safe to take a fair amount of fluid onto your stomach right before the start, but in a crit the immediate intensity may cause stomach upset if you take on too much right before the start.

|Coming from someone with sports nutrition and racing experience...it depends.
Everybody is different. Best thing to do is try both. Not at the same time, of course, but before a hard training ride, intervals or a local training race. Try the Extran ont time and the gel another. Also, see if 30 minutes, 15 minutes or 5 minutes from the start work best.
Personaly, I've found that taking a GU literaly within a couple winutes of the start helps me finish strong. Don't worry about a blood-sugar crash taking it that close to the race because the intensity of the effort actually produces hormones that help keep you from having your blood sugar drop too quickly.
Let me know how it goes,
