|I have just finish my 1st year as a Cat5 racer. Considering that I have finish a Road race or 2 and didn't finish last. My racing team members have suggest that I get a trainer for me to ride when the weather gets bad. But as a racer now ,I have been used to just riding during the off-season. The only thing I would do is just put on a couple of layers of clothing and go riding. How will a trainer help me? And what type of trainer should I buy? Fluid or Magnetic? I will be very appreciative of any advice you give me . thanks|

|and spend the money on the bike. that's imho. probably because I have no experience with trainers, aside from a borrowed one used when I broke my collarbone.|

|Unfortunately I disagree with Weiwentg on the trainier issue. They're fantastic for zone training. Unless you live in a perfectly flat area with no wind, doing controlled HR training is pretty near impossible. They're also very effective if you don't have much time. If I've only got an hour (we're talking off-season, here), I know I can get a much better workout on trainer than I can on a bike.
As far as the type of trainer, I doubt it matters much. Just don't get Performance brand. That's what I've got and it SUCKS. I actually do most of my off-season training on a Spinning bike; they're very stable and if I break it, it's the gym's problem. :-)

|I have had experience with the fluid trainers, and to me it seems like the resistance isn't adjustable enough (or else we were just too dumb to figure out the one we had at the shop). I like my Cyclops mag trainer. It may be a tad louder than the fluid, but I have the option of turning the resistance down really low if I need to spin/recover, or turning it up onto "max" for things like muscle tension intervals.
Agree with shirt about how indispensable a trainer becomes for specific things like focused interval work. My trainer is about the only "safe" way for me to do VO2max intervals ferinstance. I get so buggy I'd probably ride straight into a ditch if I tried them out on the road.
If you can afford it, I also agree with shirt's suggestion of Spinning classes. If you can find one taught by an actual cyclist, I find the music and group workout psychology keeps me more motivated than just sitting in front of the TV bored off my nut.
All that being said, I really HATE the indoor trainer, and will ride outdoors in all sorts of ludicrous conditions to avoid it (one of the many reasons I own a cyclocross bike nicer than the average guy's race bike) However, when daylight / time / weather just doesn't allow, the trainer is the only way to go.

|Find a gym with lots of Spinning classes. Befriend the instructors.
Scratch that. BROWN-NOSE them MERCILESSLY. After a few sessions, they won't care what you do, as long as you show up to their classes and nod your head vigorously every time they say something instructive to the class. Set your bike up in the back. Proceed to do exactly what you want to do.
I find that the blaring techno and the sight of 20 fatties huffing away in front of me helps me focus on exactly what I need to do (base, intervals, whatever.) If there's no class in the room after spinning, ride for another half hour or hour.
Another advantage to Spinning classes is you can jump straight to the weight machines afterwards if you believe in that sort of thing in the off-season. (I do.)
LFR is right: for some reason it's way less boring training in a Spinning class than it is on your rollers in front of the t.v.

|i.e. I have no issues in doing whatever the heck I want to as long as I'm doing it in the back of the class. Every so often they get a sadistic hair and make me sit in front as a "form example". They've never told me whether it's good form or bad, or whether they're referring to my pedalstroke or my assferdays...
Our team is co-sponsored by the coolest athletic club in town, which means we get free memberships and unlimited access to Spinning and the pool, etc. I do a lot of winter cross-training there, and might even get over my pathological fear of the gym this year to do specific weight training. A good friend and teammate is also one of the personal trainers there; she is one of those "Bionic Women" types one sees on the fitness apparatus ads, a former triathlete who can crush most of the pansy roadie racer boys we ride with (not to mention leave my sorry ass whimpering in the ditch) :) She has sworn to make me stronger or kill me trying...

|I work in Denver but just might be able to get there by 6. Are these long hammerfests--what is the general pace? Haven't been riding much the last few weeks so i'm not looking for a "cyclelogic" type of ride where i get dropped in 10 minutes.
Funny thing...Rally Sport is the one club in town i've never taught Spinning at. I've taught regularly at Flatirons, Mountains edge (formerly World Gym), and RPM but never there. Coincidently, the house we are living in now was formerly the owner of Rally Sport's.
You ever do the Sports Garage Thursday night cruiser rides? Cruise around town, drink beer and no lycra allowed. Lots of fun but you can't really call them a workout.

|The Rally rides are part of our team's obligation to the facility; as such, they are not "hammerfests", as the goal is to get folks out of the Spinning room and onto real bikes. A wide variety of folks show up for them, often about a 50/50 mix of guys/women, and they range from casual to Cat I. I'm always amused at the number of really serious racer guys who show up to noodle around and schmooze with the girls. We usually split into 2 groups, I'd call them "moderate" and "really slow".
I've heard of the cruiser rides; I've been sorely tempted to show up with my Euro-trash 'cross bike and full team kit just to annoy them :)

|You do see the occasional road bike or fixed on the ride, but actually it doesn't matter what you ride or wear. More of a slow cruise around Boulder. Some nights have had over 100 people. Some wearing costumes and such and some riding pretty strange contraptions. The ride kinda makes you feel like you're 12 years old again--popping wheelies and doing stupid tricks on your Montgomery Ward bike with sissy bars, cheater slick tires and a banana seat. Occasionally there is a guy that hooks up a BOB trailer outfitted with a PA speaker and disco ball and he plays tunes from an MP3 player.|

|become a spinning instructor. you get paid to work out (at least most of the time--you are there for the students and that is your focus--still you almost always get a workout as well), you get to listen to the music you want to, get a free club membership at each club you teach at (i had up to 3 at one point). You can also come in when there are no classes and use the spinning room which is usually off limits to members unless there is a class going. I also got a great deal ($200) on a Johnny G spinner pro (less than 2 years old) when one club replaced their bikes. Nice to have one at home and beats the heck out of any trainer if you ask me.|

|You'll be able to get a good workout on rollers, and work on your spin and skills at the same time. You would gain a lot from smoothing out your riding style, and trainers don't do this for you. However, if you can actually ride outside (we get 50 inches of snow per year here and the sun sets early) on a regular basis, that is probably better.|| |
