Training Question?RaiderMike

After taking a few weeks off from riding due to a neck injury, I started training again a couple weeks ago. Before I was hurt I was averaging about 19 to 20 mph on the 25 mile loop that I ride that mostly consists of rolling hills, and a 4 mile stretch of flats right along the beach. My first few rides back my speed average was considerably higher that it was before I was hurt (about 22mph avg.)but now after riding a few weeks I am back into the mid 20mph range. I ride this loop about 3 times a week, and 1 day a week I do hills only which usually works out to about 8 miles of hills, and 10 miles of flats connecting them. Why has my speed avg. dropped off? One would think that the more you ride the quicker you would get. Any body have any advice? This my first year road biking.

The increased performance you noticed after a brief layoff is a common experience. The short rest allowed your body to absorb and adapt to your training stresses without detraining. Riding the same terrain under the same training load, which we all do, tends to produce performance plateaus. Also, riding in the medium-hard range, which most of us also do, prevents complete recovery and also produces performance plateaus and staleness. It's best to vary intensity, distance, and volume to keep both body and mind rested and refreshed.
Thanks Jon! NMRaiderMike
