im a 16 yr old mountain bike racer who recently purchased a road bike. i would like to get away from mtn bike racing, and do more road races. in mountain biking i do races in the sport or comp classes, i was just wondering if anyone knew what CAT in road racing would the sport or comp level be in.

you can quickly move up to Cat 4 with some experience. Most of the Cat 3's I race with are Expert level MTB'ers or very good road racers who do not MTB. Cat 2 is verging on Semi-Pro MTB'er status or a top level Expert. Stick with 5's, get experience, move up to Cat 4, see how you go.

you have to to race in cat. 5 anyway and after you have done 10 or more races, you can upgrade to cat 4. i recommend you to move to cat 4 because there are alot of dumb crash in cat 5 but only after you have master the basic skill in a road racing because you might be the one who cause the crash. since most of the race will be combine with cat 4 and 5 so it kind of doesn't matter. i also recommend you to ride with a racing club so you get some ideal what you it will be like in a race.

i also forgot that you can race in the junior race(this one is better for you), i was a junior last year and the field are alot smaller compare to cat 4 and the pace could be fast and slow depend on who shows up. it alot of fun because 1)not that many crash 2)you can race with people around your age 3)meeting other junior racers. i hope you enjoy it because i have alot of fun racing in the junior cat.
