Raced yesterday in the PA State Championships. Felt great. Well rested. Normal pre race routine except a 45 minute delay during which I consumed a Gu and some Gatorade. It was 95 degrees and humid which is not unusual for here. About 1/2 way up the second climb I was going great in good position near the front when I kind of lost feeling in my legs, my heart rate soared and maxed at about 194 and I lost all power. I slowed down, barely crested the hill(lost the pack)and continued. My heart rate would not recover for about 10 minmutes. (Below 185) By the second lap my legs and back were cramping and I had the chills. I finished the race, obviously out of contention, but somehow got stroger as the race went on. Normally I'm an excellent climber and I wasn't really pushing harder than normal. Any ideas?
Only the obvious...Wayne

you were overheating/had heat exhaustion which could have led to heat stroke. Chills is one of the warning signs. Probably with the humidity you just couldn't cool down, maybe you were dehydrated to start? Did you spend alot of time in the heat before the race started? I've heard of racers sitting in AC in a car right up to start time just to try to keep core body temperature down as much as possible. Weird stuff like you describe starts happening again, probably best to stop and get cooled off.
