Can a racer start off racing in a higher CAT? or do you have to work your way through the categories. is there any shortcuts to get to the CAT 1,2,3 level?

You need to start with Cat 5. You may be strong and fast, but there's more to racing than strength. For your own safety and the safety of others, you need the pack skills that can only be honed in the (surprise) pack. Your racing success will accelerate your rise through the categories.

your way up. The only shortcut would be to win every race you enter, go up to 4's, win 5 of those in a row, go to 3's, win 5 of those and then someone will probably upgrade you to a Cat 2, from there, if you keep winning, you can be a pro. How quick do you want to move up? Racing Mtn v. road is very different, it's not that simple.

I've been told that you can include a letter along with your license application explaining why you think you should enter racing at a higher category than normal. If the USCF accepts your reasoning, they'll issue you a license with the category you requested. I assume you'd have to include some compelling arguments other than "you strong like bull" :-) Perhaps you were a collegiate road champion? Try it, what could it hurt?
