When to measure weight/bodyfat w/a Tanita(5 posts)

When to measure weight/bodyfat w/a TanitaJSchneb

I recently bought a Tanita Scale so I could measure my body fat%. Tanita recommends that you measure in the early evening due to hydration factors. Historically, I've always measured my weight in the morning. Now, my question is sould I measure weight/bodyfat % in the moring or evening, both in the evening, or weight in the AM and % in the evening? Any thoughts are appreciated...

There's a margin of error in the Tanita, just like any other method. Just make sure you're measuring under similar conditions each time and note any trends. The actual % number is a little meaningless.

Here's what I've found. My % is higher in the morning. The manual stated this could be from static buildup from rolling around in the sheets. Also, it is always higher if my stomach is full of fluid. In other words, if I just drank a bottle of water, it will be higher. My suggestion is to measure both in the morning and evening consistently and watch for trends.

I read 3-4% higher bodyfat if I measure in the mornings than if I measure at 8 PM or so. If I measure late at night, just before bed, I get a low reading if I have stayed active, a high reading if I dozed off in front of the TV.

My measurements are, however, thrown off by my commuting schedule. I usually try to get a nice hard ride home, and exercise before a BF reading throw it off.

I measure weight and bodyfat simultaneously. I may weigh myself and make a mental note of the reading at any time of the day, usually to get an idea of my state of hydration, but I only record it in the evenings when I get a BF reading.

I do note that the two readings may run contrary to each other. Days with higher BF are typically days of lower weight, and vice versa.

Use the Tanita to track CHANGES. To find out your real BF, get yourself dunked by a pro. Some gyms offer this service periodically, with a trailer making the rounds and charging about $40 or so for the test. With that number in hand, you can then track your progress with your Tanita.

I usually check mine twice daily. Once in the morning after the first bathroom visit and once in the evening before riding.

What I'd like to know is what other people are using for the Male/Female/Athlete mode. I switched it from Athlete to Male and my body fat jumped to like 17%! Yikes! I thought I was doing good around 10-13% in Athlete mode.
