Green Mountain Stage raceTravis

Did anyone do the Green Mountain stage race in Vermont last year? It is scheduled for 30 Aug-2 Sept 2002. Just curious
how tough the Cat 4/5 races would be. It hill profiles look challenging on the website. I heard that the race begins with a "mass start prologue" that appears to be an uphill time trial of maybe 7 or 8 miles. Thanks for any information anyone can provide

I rode the 4/5. It is te toughest race I have ever done and I have 15 races in so far this year alon. The key for stage one is to stay up front. Do not get stuck behind the guys who can't climb. Prepare for more pain on your bike than you have ever experienced. Stage two, is pretty easy if its not raining. One 2 1/2 mile climb you do three times with a 6 miles descent and a dirt road thats about 1/2 miles long where alot of people crash. Stage 3, WHOA! 2 BIG appalacian gaps, the frst is 4 miles long wITH A GRADUAL UPGRADE AS IT Goes on with only the last 2 miles being really tough BUT you must stay with the group since ther is a 9 miles FAST as hell decent and if you loose the group your on your own for the rest of the stage. Then there is another nasty dirt road you hit at 30mph and 15% of the field will flat. After this there is a LONG 10 miles climb with the last 3miles being BRUTAL like th first day. The last day is a crit around Burlington with a big hill and some skethcy pavement. The pace is unreal fast and if you dont stay in the top 8 people you can forget it. Half the feld will get pulled and the other half will exhaust themselves trying to catch the leaders after several days of hard ass riding, trying to catch up to the leaders in the crit since the 7 people in front of you could not hold the pace. Whew! Its my personal TDF and I am hoping to be in the top 10 this year if I race 4/5. If I race 3s though I am just going to try and pull two good days, the first and the 3rd. Good Luck!

OK, so it IS tough. It sure looked that way from the partial race flyer they posted. I will give it a try and see what happens. I am moving to Rhode Island next month and am going to look for a team to join that will be doing the race. Thanks for the advice and see you there
