preprations for State RR Championships?flyinbowlofmilk

I plan on going to NC/SC State RR Championships next weekend. It will be my 1st road race. What should my expectations be like going into it. Considering that I am going to try to do my best there. How should I race with the other Cat 5 racers from the racing team that I am a member? And is there any advice the racing gurus can give me going into my 1st road race(including positioningof myself and helping teammates)? I have only done Criteriums . Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey BOWLOFMILK,

I am a cat 4 about to be a cat 3 and my advice is this- in the cat 4/5 series I would always race for myself. Its not about your team unless you have a VERY well organized one.Thats unusual. Try to stay in the top 15 places so you can avoid crashes..cause they happen alot. Don't go off the front....don't worry about break aways that have fewer people than 6 IF the break away occurs more than 8 miles before the finish. It is a CAT 5 race so STAY up near the front. Stay behind someone elses wheel until the very last 100 yards or so. STAY up near the front. O enjoy being a part of the peloton! Relax and try not to be too anxious...don't worry about what might happen...just watch what does and react. Have a kick ass time :)

Yup, stay near the front. If possible, get situated in the beginning third of the stagin area. Hmmm, don't chase down every break, don't forget to drink every 15 mins or so, Don't forget about breathing. I say that one because I've been in the pack with guys that hold there breathe for some reason. What else, oh, stay off the brakes, if there is a crash behind you, don't look around at it. I think that about covers it, and have fun!
