Everyone starts out a 5 and works up. From 5 to 4, it's an upgrade usually after 10 mass start races. From 4 to 3, I think it's 25 races, with some placings. After that, I forget, because I'll never go there.

Go to the USA Cycling website and look under Road Racing Rules for upgrades.

By Cat 4, you need to obtain points to upgrade by placing top 7 in races. You can go up if you get many top 10's in a year also but after Cat 3, you need to get points by winning races and then apply for the upgrade to USCF.

Depending on what Cat and where you want to go, the points are different. It's all on the USA cycling site.

Its all based on a points system. From a Cat 3 to CAt 2 you need 25 points, which depend on your placings at races. You also need a letter of recommendation from a coach or team president. From a cat 2 to cat 1 you need more points (and a sponsor to pay for all the racing)

USA cycling webpage. In most parts of the country they are the governing body for cycling. Where are you? There are typically webpage calenders that will provide links to info on most of the road races in your area.

Thank you so much for the information. I am still looking for a serious group ride in West suburbs of chicago. Any of you guys have some information I would really appreciate it. Don't bother sending in for a license yet. You can just buy one when you show up for your first race and the promoter will send all of your paperwork to usac for you.
man i sent it already.. :(((( & competitive group rides?bisiklet

Go ahead and get a license when you show up to race. My understanding is that USAC will just run the first application that they get and disregard the second.
when did you send it?climbo
May 17, 2002 10:11 AM
if it was a while back, call USCF and they might be able to fax you a 30 day temporary approval to race if they have your money. I have done it before when renewing but I'm not sure if they will do that for a new license.
I sent it yesterday how long??bisiklet
