Caution: Triathlon Question(3 posts)

Caution: Triathlon Questionmixinbeatz

Last night over dinner my wonderful girlfriend proclaimed, "Since you are doing so well with your training and racing on the road, I think I will do some triathlons this summer, will you help my cycling?" I obviously agreed, but to be quite honest, I have no idea how to structure a 3 day training schedule. She is planning on doing a six day week, with 3 runs, 2 swims, and 3 workouts on the bike. She has a great aerobic base due to the fact she runs about an hour a day for the past year or so, and is a strong swimmer. Should I focus on building strength, or should she be doing more tempo. I have no problem structuring a 6 day cycling week for myself, but with three sports, I have no idea where to start. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Brock -- You'd want to structure the training schedule to essentially be geared towards TTs, with no recovery rides. By going to the other sports (especially the swimming), you give the cycling specific musculature a break. Gotta keep tabs on the overtraining symptoms, however, as it's easy to get into a "hard every day" mentality. Think of how you structure your training -- sprints, climbs, tempo rides, intervals, recovery rides, etc. Well, you'd just ditch the sprints and recovery rides, use hilly longer rides as the hill work, and concentrate on AT/LT rides and dialing in the position.
