|A pulled muscle should hurt when you contract it, and basically be painless when not active. A cramp is usually a pretty acute experience brought on by abnormal excessive activity. Typically a cramp is extremely painful, and people instinctually contract the antagonist muscles which 1) lengthens the cramping muscle into a position where it can't produce much force (and is therefore less painful)
2) activates neuro pathways that inhibit the contraction of the cramping muscle.
So, how did this situation arise and in what muscle, would probably go a long way to determining whats wrong (it might not be a pulled muscle or a cramp, necessarily)?
