sizing question: 57 or 59jbw
May 12, 2002 11:02 PM
i'm looking a new road bike. when i measure/get sized, my LBS recommends a 58. The bike i want to get comes in 57 or 59. should i go a cm long or a cm short? what will the trade-off be? thanks,
go with top tube length...merckx56

the vertical sizing is almost immaterial. it's easier to go with a longer stem on a short top tube than the other way around. how tall are you and what's your inseam?

whoops... that was actually top tube i was talking about. should have mentioned it. i am 6'1" with a 33 inch inseam.

I'm 6'1" and have a 32 inch inseam and ride a 57 Look(56.5 top tube) and a 56 Eddy Merckx (56 top tube). the Look has a 120 stem, while the Merckx has a 125, thus creating the same cockpit. the difference between a 57 tt and a 59 tt is huge (more than just 2 cm)! the 57 with a stem somewhere between 110 and 125 should do the trick. if your LBS is worth a crap, they'll fit you to be sure that the bike fits and is set-up properly. ask questions when you go to the shop. i tried a 59 litespeed ulitmate that was a swinging deal, but it was just too long! a deal really isn't if the frame doesn't fit! hope this helps!

thanks. that sounds right. the bike shop doesn't have any 57s or 59s built up in what i'm looking for. i dont want to push them too far b/c i will probably be getting the bike from a friend who works for the frame co. i do know someone with a cross bike in 59 from the same company-- i can ride that and that should make my decision final.
