Well my first race was this last Saturday. It was a 30 mile cat5/citizen race on a nice hilly Iowa course. Oh and of course the wind was blowing as well!!

So we took off going downhill at about 25-30mph...then we climbed at about 20. I found someone I wanted to stay with and started drafting off of him. We reached a flat stretch and being the bone head that I was I took off towards the front and drafted off of one of the team members that was up front. that was my big mistake. I should've stayed in the pack. When we turned the corner and headed up the hill things picked up and I was just about off the back.

I ended up off the back before the end of the first lap and worked with another guy for rest of the way until I slowly pulled away from him and finished 13th out of 20 people and 2nd in my age group (less than 30).

I'm ready for my next one already. Hopefully this weekend!

Congradulations. Sound like it went fine. I can only hope my 1st road race will be like that. And besides you are still in your prime . You will get better as you race more. I wish you more god luck or whatever it is they say. At least you are not in your 30's like me (31 going on 32). Keep racing ,dude

Keep it up! If nothing else, you learned something in this first race (to kinda trust your instinct and know your limits), and you'll be a smarter rider on the next one. I did something similar to that this past race. Finally was able to get to the front of my field, and then tried attacking in rollers with no team help. Didn't work out like I wanted it to and I got shelled, but hey, I finished a race in which some people quite only after 1 lap! Next weekend will be different :)
