Tire width for racing?(3 posts)

Tire width for racing?John Frank

I'm a 175 lbs racer (fairly new) and I'm wondering if anyone could give me the common wisdom of racing on tires of 20, 23, or 25 mm? I'm running 23's now and they're fine but would a smaller or larger tire allow me to go faster?

Thanks in advance for the responses, I'm about to buy new tires for the start of the racing season.
Stick with the 23sKerry

20s would require quite high pressure, and therefore your handling would suffer - at high pressures, tires are more likely to chatter or bounce in a turn when they hit something. 25s are a possibility, but many racing tires are not available in 25. 23s should work just fine.

I used to do a lot of switching between 20s and 23s, depending on the course conditions. I'd recommend having both available to you (ideally on separate wheels so you don't have to spend the pre-race time swapping out tires).
