Junior Gearing- HELP!(7 posts)

Junior Gearing- HELP!XCGEEK
Mar 25, 2002 10:02 AM
Does anyone know of a high end cassette that is compatible with the USCF's junior gearing regulations? I can have a max gear of 14 teeth (talk about worthless in a sprint). So far the only one I have found has been a Tiagra and I do not want to put a Tiagra cassette on my Ultegra and D/A bike. I usually race Cat4 but I need the junior gearing for nationals, regional camps, ect.

ultegra has a 9sp 14-25
pretty sure you can get DA that way also.
just ask you LBS to order one. i'm sure you can get em from quality.

also, the best sprinters haul ass on a 53/14. sprinting is about cadence. track sprinters ride relatively small gears and they have no probs sprinting. you'll learn this as you mature.
plus at jr races everyone has a 53 14 as their biggest gear anyhow.
I believe Branfordbike has 'wierd' cassette ratios...weiwentg

else, the LBS should be able to order the cassette. Ultegra and 105 go all the way up to 14-25, I think.
btw, from what I know, Ultegra cogs are the same as DA (aside from the titanium cogs).

These things were IMPOSSIBLE to find. Just plain impossible. I had to have a friend of mine who happened to own shop order one for me. Quality was the only distributor that had any, and they had a limit of 2 per shop. This year I have no idea what the situation is. I imagine Quality has hassled their suppliers quite a bit.

Instead of a cassette, you may just want to try a 45 tooth front chainring. I have one ordered and that will allow you to use your 12. Then, before a cat 4 race or something you just pull off your crankarm and put your 53 or whatever back on if you really think you need it. I rode a 53 15 in a bunch of cat 4 races last year because I didn't want to adjust the lockout, and it never affected me unless I was going down a hill or something, but then you can usually just stay on someone's wheel and you'll be fine. The 45 12 is also the biggest gear assortment you can have, which, at any given cadence, will be faster than a larger chainring and larger cog.

Dude, if you can spin out a 53/14 in a flat sprint you should go pro! Now!

And yeah, you don't want to put that crappy Tiagra stuff on your sweet ride. It'll totally suck.

I thought I could sprint in it until a team mate asked me why a had such a low cadence in sprints. Oh well, live and learn, now I jump sooner and spin faster, thanks.
