Follow up to Woof's question: Road rashwerdna
Mar 11, 2002 9:32 AM
I was involved in a spill at a race this weekend. My shoulder and butt/thigh are bruised now. My elbow and hand got a little bruised too. How should I care for my wounds?
Thanks,
Andrew

Make sure it's washed thoroughly, then use a triple anti-biotic ointment. Use non-stick gauze (telfa pads), and tape over the rash areas. As for bruised areas, light massage can help push the diffused blood out of the area.

Well, I'm no doc, but do consider myself a road rash layman specialist through necessity. I recommend you wash the area daily, that is, of course, after it has been completely cleaned as close to the original injury as possible. Road rash has more in common to a burn than a cut. Get some Silvadene cream if you can. Apply that daily, put some Neosporin over it and keep covered with non-stick Telfa padding. Change all that stuff daily or ever other day depending upon how bad it is. The key is to keep it clean and fully lubed and covered at all times. Contrary to some opinions, do not leave it uncovered or unbandaged at all and do not let it get a hard scab covering at all. Proof this method works without scarring even for some nasty RR is all over me. See www.bravesoldier.com if you like. Good luck.

For bruises (no road rash) you should ice for the first 48 hours (reduces swelling, pain, and further damage from swelling) and then apply heat to increase blow flow and get all those technicolor garbodies out of there.
