Master 45+ - Losing Speed!!(2 posts)

Master 45+ - Losing Speed!!veloB

I have raced for about 10 years, Cat.III -- during that time "graduating" from 35+ to 45+ division. These two are often run together.

Road races and TTs, I can pretty much hold my own. But, the speed necessary for Crits is becoming increasingly problematic!!

This fall/winter season, I have ridden a considerable increase of base miles compared to the past several years.

I would be interested in others comments, suggestions, and particularly experience as how to regain/maintain/improve speed along with the inexorable aging factor.

Thanks in Advance

It is inevitable that you will lose some speed as you age. That is one of the reasons for having the Masters categories. Running them together is jst a slap in the face, if you ask me. You're probably going to have to use a little more cunning than relying on a blazing sprint. But the way to speed is....SPEED. Ride fast to race fast. But take the gradual approach, as the body is a little more unforgiving of the exuberance of youth.
