Corn oil as energy source...Jesus_Granola
Jan 18, 2002 9:06 PM
...got your attn? ;) Well, if you ate corn oil, i'm afraid you'd only have enough energy to run to the toilet and throw up... Now, my question: I'm 19 yrs old, and I'm going to enter my first race in April (cat 4 or 5). I was wondering if anyone could give some advice on training for such a short period of time, and what should I expect? Thanx :)

Three months ain't bad, especially if you're as elastic as most children your age.

Easy. Simply compress a Friel cycle into 12 weeks. Do 3-4 weeks of base with nothing intense, hard, fast, or anything else a rug rat like yourself will constantly be tempted to do.

Then ease some strength work in during the 4th week; you know, a few hill repeats, some big-gear low-cadence lactic shots. In week 6 do a few speed workouts; these should be to develop leg speed, not strength or max HR. See! There you go again, busting your ass too early. Week 7 combine some of that speed and strength stuff and bust your ass. Week 8: relax. Make it mirror your second week. Week 9 and 10: start putting the pieces together. Do a couple long rides (your longest should have been around week 5) with some sustained pain followed by some hill climbs and crowned with a few sprint repeats at the end. Week 11: mirror week 8. Week 12: go kick some ass.

I assume you know how to structure a week so you're not doing the same thing every day or at the same intensity. If you don't know and refuse to read anything, go ask your high school cross country coach the principles of structuring a weekly workout schedule.

Good luck, sport.

ps: Why is everybody posting their age now? If it's required, I'm 36.424 today.
Of course It's required! I'm 17.241 today. :) nmAllen az

Dude, I still get advice from my h.s. xc coach. Best coach I ever had.

That's right, that makes him pretty goddam old.
We should be racing each other sometime this summer Shirt!allervite

Whoa! How'd you know about those rides. Have you been on the web site or something. But the fact that I have not been showing up for those rides is not on the web. What gives? I thought you lived in the bay area.
Dude, everybody knowsshirt

you've been slacking. Terry, James, even the youngster Sam. It's all over town. Even Dale down at Village Cycle whined to me the other day, "Allervite. He never comes by anymore..."

You know, I'm REALLY TEMPTED to tweak you out even more, but this little voice keeps telling me it's the Wrong Thing.

You don't know who I am. I don't know who you are. But I've been doing some of the Sue's rides the last couple months since I'm in Redding three days a week, and I haven't met anybody named William or Bill. That can mean one of two things:
1. You're slacking.
2. You're doing long, slow base conditioning like you should and letting the hotheads go blow themselves up in the winter.

So: I'm not doing Sue's this Saturday because Shasta looks good and I'm going to take my kid up for his second day (ever) of skiing. But if you want to meet me real early Sunday for a short ride (kid=Sunday School, egad), lemme know. Say, Placer and Swasey at 7:30?
Peter, it's me Mike!allervite

Shasta is great right now. It's supposed to storm this weekend though. How old is your kid? Mine is 3.

Man! You had me wracking my brain trying to figure out which local was pulling my chain. So you mentioned Terry, James, and Sam (good riders ha?). Who else have you ridden with? A guy named Mark Blaser is probably the fastest guy of the bunch. He is a master also. He was our end of the summer Wed. Night World Champion (Wed nights in the summer is theee hammer fest.) A guy named Jonz Norine is ungodly fast also.

I have been doing Sunday rides with a saner branch of the club.

7:30! Is it even light out then? If there is no rain I'll be there.

faster guys than James? That sucks. He embarrassed us all on his cross bike a couple weeks ago.

See you at Placer/Swasey at 7:30. I've gotta be back by 9:00 (Placer/Igo/Platina/Honeybee/Texas/299/Buenaventura/Placer?) If you can't make it, call me at 243-4655.

Yup James is plenty fast and definately one of the best climbersallervite

But Jonz Norine when he is in shape can drop James and many of the rest of us at will. In an informal race once, he attacked about 400 meters from the sprint (Swasey). I was lucky and jumped on his wheel. He towed me right up to the line. You think that would be a good lead out and an easy sprint since I was on his wheel the whole way, but he pulled at 34+ the whole way (slightly uphill). It was all I could do to stay with him. Hope to see ya Sunday.
Props!allervite
