How long to upgrade?Flava

Just a general poll for all of you road racers out there - after upgrading to cat IV, how long did you spend at the cat IV level before upgrading to cat III? Does anyone have a feel for an average amount of time for most people?

Got two teammates who jumped into a bunch of Cat 4 races this year, aced them, and earned their upgrades in < 1 season. On the other hand, it takes many of us time (a few years) to amass the finishes (ten top 10s) or points (20 in 12 months) to earn the upgrade. Not only is strength/fitness a factor, but for points, the ability to do a bunch of races in a season (don't count training races!) is also a factor.

It depends on how you approach races. I started as a 5 this year( first year) and became a 4 after a win and some top 5's. I think I may make it to 3's but you almost have to sacrifice aggressive racing i.e. getting in breaks and trying for the win, and instead sitting in and going for a top 6 points position.

Before you attempt a go with the 1/2/3's, enter as many 3/4 races as possible. This will give you an idea on speed, smoothness, and skill of the 3 class and will make the transition a little easier. Of course, there's nothing like getting smoked in your first 1/2/3.
