|some friendly advice on bonking||Duane Gran|

|I just wanted to share a friendly reminder to some of the other racers out there. Last weekend I bonked hard at a race. I've felt the effects of glycogen depletion in training but always kept it under control, but in the race I hit the wall. Needless to say, I slipped off the back and literally crawled into the finish. It was miserable on many levels.
After recovering a bit I analyzed what I did wrong. Basically, my race was at noon and I ate breakfast at 6am in order to ride out with a friend to her earlier race. Although I drank water and munched on a little bit of food it was not enough. At the time I thought that this wasn't a good idea, but I was too self confident.
Here is the moral of the story... regardless of how confident you are in your ability, if you don't fuel up properly you may bonk, and if you do bonk you will regret it. This whole week is being spent on recovery as a consequence. I hope the explanation is helpful to some.
