|i had surgery to have a rod put in my leg since i fractured my tibia and fibula bones back in february. i just got an exercise bike and was wondering what i should concentrate on it (i.e. spinning, hill climbs, etc., to bring the muscle in my legs back and be able to ride faster and better once i get on my bike. the doctor said i could do whatever i want on it, just whenever i feel to much stress on the bone to slow down and take it easier. any tips or training ideas would be appreciated. thanks|

|Glad to hear you're well again; it's good that the doc says 'do whatever you want'. You probably will feel some pain at some point, either from long mileage or even sharp bumps in the road. Be your own guide when it comes to the pain, and always consult with your doctor if anything happens.
Was one leg in a cast for a long time? Not knowing the full story, nor your previous fitness level, the following assumes an even level of atrophy in both legs.
Consider separating your training into two components: a riding component that focuses on distance and small gears, and a strength training regimen of free weights and/or cybex (spelling?) machines.
The weight training is to strengthen the muscles without stressing the bone. To that end an excersise like squats may be uncomfortable at first if you experience any 'bone' pain (but again, weightlifting should be about higher reps with perfect form anyway). But muscle group isolation exercises like leg extensions, adductions, and the like shouldn't strain load-bearing bones like the tib/fib.
No big chainring riding for the first month or so; look at spring training charts as a guideline, where base mileage is progressive and in lighter gears. It'll be hard as the weather is nice and everyone else is blasting away in their 52x12, but this season should be about progressive rebuilding for you. A spinning class may be good, but again, avoid larger gears.
