I think these guys cheated.Maillot Rouge

I did a road race on Sat. and I thought I was winning as I came across the line only to find out I was third. What happened was The Cat 1,2s went off about 10 minutes before us and were scheduled to do 100 miles. The 1s were taking their time so we caught them pretty quick and the packs mixed together. After about a lap all of the 1s took off, there were only about 10 of them but there must have a couple of 4s that went with them. Before we started we were given specific instructions not to work with the other Cats so I didn't jump over to the back of the group of 1s. I was at the front the whole time and only saw 1 guy off the front of the 1s pack. I tried telling the officials but they seemed to be friends of the guys that came in first. I was bummed because I rode a perfect race right down to the sprint. I guess I just needed to vent.

I've seen this happen before; it certainly sounds like you should talk this over with the other riders that finished with you; if a group of you agree, you can lodge an official protest together. Especially if you get some 1/2's to agree that the suspect riders were in their category.

It may be too late now, but you never know. Officials do not have a happy life, and may not have been receptive to you if there were problems with registration, center line rules, keeping track of the packs. Ask if there was an official on the course during the race, and talk with him/her. Be persistent but be 'gentle' with the officials (either during the race or days later)

what was the time gap between you and the lead guys?

There were 6 of us in what we thought was the lead break and I saw at least 4 of them try to talk to the officals about it. If there was cash on the line I would have been more persistent but for medals... I consider myself the winner.

Thanks,

dude, of course they cheated. The moment they sucked onto a 1/2 wheel, they were cheating. USCF or NCNCA would agree with that. Protest their cheating lazy asses and get your farkin medal. Then challenge them to a private urban sprint-off in the worst section of town to drive the point home. :-0
