Would it be wise to race without toe clips or a clipless system and in a t-shirt? The stuff is too expensive.

You don't need a cycling jersey to race - a t-shirt will do. However, you will seriously compromise your performance without some means to keep your feet on the pedals. You don't need clipless, but toe clips are a minimum. If you're trying to sprint out of a corner and your foot comes off the pedal, you and everyone around you will seriously regret it. Even if your foot never slips off, you'll be losing serious efficiency by having to hold your foot in place without mechanical assistance. And you can ask yourself, why would you want to race and put yourself at such a serious disadvantage? In any competitive event where equipment is an issue, there is a certain minimum requirement to make it worth your time. You certainly can enjoy cycling without all the latest stuff, and you can race with decent (not the latest/lightest) stuff, but you wouldn't enter a road bike race on a BMX bike. What would be the point?
