Yes, I am yet another mountain biker who is trying to overcome his intimidation and try a road race. I spend about 70% of my training time on the road now, generally with at least a few other people, so I'm fairly experienced in riding with groups. My question is what category? Five seems logical for my first race but I don't have any idea if that's what I should do.

If I go really hard, I average about 250 watts for an hour (I weigh 153#.) Anybody out there have a feel for where that puts me?

Thanks

All racers start in cat. 5, you upgrade to 4 after a certain number of races, and from there you can upgrade to 3 based on results.
I see... so it's impossible to sandbag onthe road--thanks.

I once did a 5 race with 1 pro, 2 semi-pro and probably a dozen expert MTB's like myself in it. Most MTB'ers don't do enough races a year to move up on starts and it can be hard to get results in a stacked field like this. Also this really only applies to road races with climbs as most MTB's are not to fond of crits.
