Two very good friends of mine are throwing an egagment party the day after X-mass. I think its bad timing seeing that the wedding isnt until MAY but they do what they want. I thought about flying them to Paris but that might be over the top. They wont give me any help at all.... gift certificate? How much?
good bottle of champagne? nmDougSloan

They must be really good friends :O) Engagement gifts are tough. Your initial thought is the direction you want to go though. It should be something they can share. How about a gift certificate for a weekend stay at a really romantic bed & breakfast? Do they like wine? How about a beautiful decanter set with glasses and a case of a fine wine to go with it? We received this as a gift from some dear friends. We think of them when we use it. Did the bride register anywhere? If so, they already have picked out stuff they want and need. That may be a good place to start.
Save the big present for the wedding . . .ms

I would get them something nice, but not too expensive for an engagement gift like a nice bottle of wine or champagne. IF they make it through the engagement, then spring for the big present. You may ask why I say IF they make it through the engagement -- I think that my engagement experience is not atypical -- my wife and I had more significant disputes during the seven months of our engagement than we have had in the sixteen years since then.
Excellent points and ideas...many thanks -nm-CARBON110

I don't remember when I attended an egagement party where wedding type gifts were given. I do remember where people have given unsolicited gifts at engagement parties. Wine, booze, funny gifts, etc. I've done things like etched his and her glasses, his and her booze gifts like wine and beer, etc.
