I walked in last night to see my wife watching Oprah's "My Favorite Things" episode. Someone at her show or the network must have worried that they couldn't find enough time for more commercials, when someone thought, "Why not make the entire show a commercial?!" So Oprah gives away free stuff, most of it fairly expensive, to everyone in the audience. Now, the richest woman in the US doesn't give from her own pocket; she talks companies into giving away samples in return for the on-air plug, and gives it to a studio full of women. None of these people appear to be hurting for cash, either. I have read that Oprah is indeed generous and charitable, so I shouldn't be all that disgusted and cynical about her. But the women in the audience fall into hysterics: crying, frenzied screaming, jumping, and trembling during the giveaway. Did anyone else see this? What is up with this? Is it Oprah, or the loot that causes these people to lose their mind?

Don't get Oprah myself. I think one needs more estrogen to get her. My wife loves her. Thinks she's a big inspiration. I can't stand her. Think she's a big phony who panders to people's emotions.

I read that Michael Moore thinks Oprah is a good pick for the Dems in 2004. With the reception she seemed to get on that show last night, I think she could be a contender. So she's a phony, panders to emotions, and doesn't have any articulated policies? Well...sure. That's just what politics today has come to. Scary, but I think she could pull off an electoral victory anywhere she wants.
