Today in music history - Glory and tragedymoneyman

The Glory In 1968, the New Yardbirds played their first concert. They later changed their name to Led Zeppelin.

The Tragedy In 1976, "Disco Duck" hit number one on the charts.

I have plenty of Led Zeppelin recordings, both vinyl and CD. I have never owned a copy of "Disco Duck."

The Yardbirds didn't "change their name to Led Zeppelin." Led Zeppelin was an entirely different band, with Jimmy Page being the only member who had been in the Yardbirds. Keith Relf, I believe, was the last singer of the Yardbirds. Page tracked down former mate John Paul Jones and a singer search turned up unknown Robert Plant who looked about 15 but sounded like a full-fledged bluesman (at least of the blue-eyed variety).

Legend has it that the name Led Zeppelin came from Keith Moon. When asked (by whom I don't recall) how he thought Jimmy Page's new band would go over with tha' kids (who are, of course, alright), Moon tha' Loon responded with the words ("like a bleedin' LZ") that became the band's moniker.

bit of Rock-lore a long time ago. Sounds like something Keith would have said. Keith Moon was a bomb! (he also liked to blow things up :O)

I saw them at the Garden in '75 and '77. I was offered tickets in 2000, when Page was around, but he hurt his back and we were going to be away when they rescheduled.

I have been doing a Zep retro this morning in honor of your post :O)
