Education but beyond that;

My main retro-ride: $10, 1986 Specialized Allez with Shimano 600sis. Found at a yardsale. It fit prefectly and got me back into serious fitness cycling.

A bunch of GL330 and Wolber rims, dirt cheap. Enough rims to keep me racing until I'm dead.

Bought an '84 Civic S new 19 years and 283,000 miles ago and it's still dependable and good to drive--a little slower, a little harder to start, a bit creakier, all of which applies to me, too. I'll keep driving it until it finally dies, and then I'll have it bronzed and put it in my living room. I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it.
$2000 down payment on a house ...Humma Hah

About 1981 I made a down payment on a house while interest rates were sky-high. That depressed the prices. The $2000 down payment locked the price in, but the interest rate would be whatever was the going rate at settlement, and I figured it would drop. In the two months it took to build the house, the interest rate dropped about 2.5% and the asking price went up about $11,000. We refinanced later to a MUCH lower rate, saving even more.

Ten years earlier, in 1971, I made the purchase I'm fonder of. For about $90 I bought my beloved Schwinn cruiser, still my favorite ride.

When my wife saw the copay for our first child's delivery (C-section no less), she asked the hospital clerk "Is that all?!"

"Oh no honey," she replied, "this is just the beginning..."

I'll agree that it's the best money I've spent too, but it's the most expensive "investment" ("infestment"?) I've made as well. :^)

My share(after insurance) of an ambulance ride so I could be treated in my home town. I can't imagine spending 10 weeks in a town where I know nobody.
