I suspect the religiosity you ascribe to Washington was part of the mythmaking.

A quick check found this reference, on the virgianiaplaces website. Sure I can find more, because this has been my understanding for years.

OldEd, thanks for the link. I found this interesting and it appears that there is a lot of information in direct contrast. I'll confess that I'm not a historical scholar, so we probably can't sort this one out easily. I did a quick search for some of the material I've read in the past, but I'll need to look closer and get back with you, but I don't think it is fair to write it off as "mythmaking".
