When George W first used the term, I remember wondering what it ment. It's been over three years since he said it. Can anybody give me two or three examples that would help me to understand the term? I'm still wondering.

But then he probably has done a photo op at a food bank. Or maybe it's the jobs of dying in Iraq he has created for all the poor in this country.

Keillor says 'put them on death row, but give them a wish'retro

Prairie Home Companion was a re-run this weekend, first broadcast right after the 2000 elections. Garrison Keillor said a CC will put a child on death row, but give him a wish before he's executed: "He gets to go to Disneyland."

I gave three answers to a somewhat silly question and the best responce is underfunding. It matters not what Bush does. He has spent more and done more on compassionate causes that any press. has. Those who hate, hate for just hateful reasons. why not just be honest and say so.
Actually, bic, the best answer is yours.Spoke Wrench

I originally intended it as an honest onjective question. Believe it or not, there are some Americans who are still trying to form objective opinions regarding the various political entities and we are the ones who will almost surely decide the next election.

I expected to get a number of cynical answers from Bush haters, but I also thought I might get an honest answer or two which you originally provided. Then you ruined it all by choosing to put yourself into the same partisan box with the Bush haters by calling my question silly.

That really is cold.

it's silly because, the term is silly. nothing against you but what his admin. has done is easy to see if one looks and does not have to look that hard. you are right there are those that hate him just because hes a reb. and no matter what he does they will still hate him and never agree with anything he says or does.
Works the other way too, doesn't it? (nm)Spoke Wrench

Its a soundbyte designed to assuage Republican guilt. No demonstrated or testable meaning. The term is only used by the slippery.

There is no such thing. The term 'compassionate conservative' is designed to SUGGEST there is, though, because their strategists have finally recognized that compassion is something the American people deeply hold to.

If this is clearly understood, your last sentence is perfect.
It's hilarious that they have to specify "compassionate". (nm)czardonic

I think the real question is what's "compassion"?94Nole

I think that is definitely one place that political ideologies differ. It that a given? Am I stating the obvious?

I think compassion is summed up in the old adage of "give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." (or something to that effect).

I believe that the teacher is the compassionate one.
