|Interesting post. I just finished reading a book entitled "The Demonic Comedy" by Paul William Roberts. Roberts is a Canadian journalist who taught at Oxford and has travelled widely throughout the middle east for years. He spent time in Baghdad just prior to GWI, then got himself smuggled into Baghdad during the bombing. He has interviewed Saddam, and returned to Iraq in 95-96.
The book juxtaposes his tragi-comic personal experiences and vignettes of Iraqi life with serious political history of the whole situation going clear back to the Balfour Declaration.
This is a must read! The term theatre of the absurd is an understatement of Saddam, the Baath Party, and life in Iraq. That a society this dysfunctional could function at all is one of the wonders of the world. But then the Soviet Union lasted for sixty years or so.
Roberts' picture of psychotic middle east politics, British bungling of the mandates, and American cynicism and manipulation of the events of the past two decades is one that all consumers of popular journalism need to take a look at to detoxify themselves from the bs and propaganda we're all fed most of the time.
