thanks for everyone's advice a bit earlier on buying a digital camera. i finally decided ended up getting a canon powershot s-50 which seemed to be a good combo between high picture quality and compact size, plus lots of cool features for an ex-pro photographer to mess with. should show up friday along with an extra 256MB memory card which should hold plenty of pix. look for ride reports soon!

amazon.com has some really good deals on cameras now if anyone is still looking. most are on sale and some come with free memory cards or other goodies. free shipping too over a certain price point.
Get a USB card readerpitt83

They're cheap and make it SO much easier to upload pics. Plugging and unplugging the camera is a pain; at least my Nikon is. With a reader, it's just your F (orwhatever) drive. You also can push pics back to the card from hard drive to take for professional printing at your LCS.

A worthy $14 upgrade.
yeah thanks...planning on getting oneColnagoFE

The Compact flash ones can be had for about $15 now. Looks like it makes downloading a snap.

Get a spare battery if your camera takes a special one. Nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of an event you wanted to photograph and your battery crapping out on you.
I got a CanonS230, and two 128 compact flash cards, a spare battery, and a card reader. I got the flash card for 35 bucks at best buy, they're running rebates about every other week, often about half price after two rebates! That's all you need, except a camera bag.
yup...gonna pick one of those up tooColnagoFE

hopefully the batteries last a while. they aren't cheap! got a 256M compact flash card for about $45 after a $20 rebate. Cheap compared to some of the other memory formats.
