Sobering news. Sandstorms blowing in are reported to be shutting down the offensive. The big move on Baghdad is said to be probably next Saturday. But more disturbing is Gen. Franks' reported assessment of the cohesiveness of the Iraqi command structure. It's evidently not crumbling as hoped for. As a result Franks' senior commanders feel that two U.S. armies will not be enough to take Baghdad. The marine division held up in the Mediterranean because of Turkey as well as a marine division stationed in Italy are reportedly on the way. This is shaping up to be a grim conflict indeed.

I would think the Longbows will play a critical role in the assault against the Republican Guard, and obviously they can't be effective in a sandstorm. But I'm not sure I agree with the assesment:

The Iraqis, accustomed to these extremes of climate, will use the breather for reorganization, re-supplying the units with fresh stores of ammunition, fuel and provisions and urgent repairs of combat vehicles. They will also use the time to carry out snipe at and harry American convoys, stray vehicles and small campsites.

...not that the Iraqis won't use this time, but that it also could be okay for the Americans. They have a long thin supply line, and troops that have been going for days on end. A relatively calm day or two may not be bad...

The inability to open a front from Turkey really hurt the effort. What also hurt was that troops and materiel were waiting for days to off-load when they could have been going through the Canal.

Also, I wonder if the rumored "e-bomb" will make it's appearance just prior to entering Baghdad. There was a story on MSNBC that reporters were wrapping all communications devices in aluminum foil for protection, but I have no idea if that would be effective.
Were they making themselves aluminium foil hats too? (nm)czardonic
