|Ride a lot, eat well, take it real easy for about three weeks. A little training camp in March is something we all could use.
Remember this - 85% of all worthwhile jobs are found through friends, family, associates, i.e. your network. Answering ads is good therapy, but don't count on it for actually getting a job. Call your former customers, suppliers, competitors, that's where you'll find something new.

|Don't treat your 3 months severance as a vacation. I have no idea what you do, but in a lot of fields, the market is very tight. Start looking now. Three months will go by very quickly. Don't buy any toys or spend excessively. Relax only when you get a job.
Hit up everyone you know and every contact you've ever made, because these days it is all about networking. There are so many unsolicited resumes coming in to most companies, no one looks at them. That is the truth. It is so bad that many companies that have openings won't even advertise them because they don't want to deal with the thousands of people who will overwhelm them with calls, faxes, and mail. Don't even waste your time, paper, or postage. Networking is the only way to get a job right now. Someone you know knows someone who has an opening, and they can get you in the door. Start making a list TODAY of everyone you can call. Don't be ashamed to bother your contacts for their contacts, too. It's a dog eat dog world. Relax only when your future is assured.

|I have friends who are going on 1 year laid off and are starting to get very nervous. One programmer friend took an unrelated customer service job in the company in lui of being out of work. Another friend took a transfer to FL even though he didn't want to move. I believe that IT has the worst unemployement rates right now--and all of these people are IT. Find out what the unemployment rate is for your field. A few months ago my company posted an open IT position and got 400 resumes in under 3 hours and then they closed it. Do NOT relax. Start looking tomorrow. If you can take something else within your company even if its unrelated. Or, if you have good repore with any old employers see if they need someone.|

|I'm an electrician, got tired of being laid off working construction, started my own business and now my main problem is keeping up with business. I love it!
