| go to france | mohair_chair Feb 20, 2003 7:28 AM | | The best way to learn Spanish is to go to L.A. and work in a restaurant. That's how I learned the Spanish I know.
The only way to learn French is to immerse yourself in it, because phonetics are all important. You can't really learn French out of a book, because you have to hear it and speak it to pick up all the nuances. It's sort of like we say "thismorning" instead of "this morning," and how we choose "a" instead of "an." If they could, the French would merge all the words in a sentence together and pronounce it as a single word. Sometimes they do.
If you do go to France, don't live in Paris. Everyone wants to speak English there.
If you can't go to France, there is a series that shows up on TV every once in a while (PBS, TLC, etc.) called "French in Action" that is pretty good. It's totally in French, and it's at the beginner-intermediate level. |

| Any recommendations for software products ? | ms Feb 20, 2003 11:19 AM | | There are several software products on the market for language instruction. I had a year of French in college a generation ago (1976-77). In all of my previous trips to France, I have traveled with friends or my wife, all of whom are fluent in French. So, I never really used what little French I know. This July I will be traveling with a friend who knows less French that I do. So, I would like something to help me to improve my proficiency. |
