|This is the first American car built since 1971 that I've ever been interested in. Finally a decent chassis and IRS, plus 300+ horses.

|Beware of getting excited about concept cars. The final versions can be a little dull in comparison.
I like it, though. Looks like a cross between a new Aston Martin and an old Shelby Mustang. Pretty cool.

|Everything I've read has indicated that this is very close to what you'll be able to buy mid-2004. If that ends up being the case I think Ford is gonna have a hard time keeping up with demand. I think you nailed it--a cross between a new Aston Martin and an old Shelby Mustang.|

|THat Terrorist/Gasoline argument is such a weak one. You would be better off pushing an environmental debate over terrorism. Or maybe you can start a chain that sells only "Socially Responsible Gasoline" like they do with coffee.
It certainly looks great. That Aston Martin/Shelby cross is dead on. I thought the last generation Mustang looked great too. Did they use the lady finger tail lights? If I could afford to own two cars, I would love one like this.
I have always wanted an older mustang. One of my friends had a 72 Fastback. Never had the dispoable income to buy and maintain one though. Plus they are known as the "Rustang" here in the north east. The winters are pretty harsh on them with all the road salt.

|I drive a 91 Geo Prizm. It is a well maintained 1991 model that gets about 30 MPG. I do not beleive in driving a new car every few years. I do not like big cars. I also try to commute or run errands by bicycle whenever possible.
I do not buy animal tested items such as shampoos or moisturizers. I have avoided some stores or products in the past over their political stands or sources of products. I think socially responsible and investing is not a bad idea and I do practice it on occasion. I just do not feel it applies to gasoline. THough I did avoid Exxon after the Alask spill.
I agree that there are too many SUVs on the road. You can make a much better argument against SUVs based on consumption of natural resources, environmental and safety issues. THe terrorism/gasoline link is not a direct link such as drugs. I also think hypocrits like Robert Redford and Chevy Chase should stop publicly telling people they should not drive SUVs when they drive SUVs themselves.
THere is a direct link to drugs and terrorism whether it be funding warlords in Columbia with cocaine or the Taliban through heroin. Environmental groups tried to use mistaken logic of a link to terrorism with gasoline. It is a very distant link. Also buying Gasoline is not an illegal activity.
I sent a letter in the mail today, does that mean I supported the postal workers who go nuts and kill their coworkers? I did help pay his salary which he used to buy his guns. If you use oil to heat your house are you also supporting terrorists as well?
MJ, I agree with you that the world would be a better place with fewer SUVs on the roads. I just disagree with your terrorist support agrument.

fact is Detroit keeps bringing out "new cars" which don't have any new technology in respect of gas consumption - lets see a breakthrough with that

|Yeah, automakers have definitely not brought out any new technology in respect to gas consumption. I wish somebody would bring a hybrid engine to market. Or an electric car. Either of those would be really cool.

|I read that Chrysler is bringing out a V-10 that is supposed to generate over 500hp and mounted in the proper car, has a theoretical top speed of 300 MPH. And then I think Mercedes or some other European maker was talking of upping that with a 15? cylinder engine that would produce over 1000hp. Who really needs such power unless you're racing, but I'm sure they will sell lots of cars to rich enthusiasts.|

|Computer controlled fuel injection (and other mods, like variable valve timing and lift) has allowed a huge increase in fuel efficiency (and emissions reduction) over the last 20 years. We've taken some of it away, too, with more safety and convenience items (= more mass).
What kind of mileage did 300 (or even 200) horsepower cars get in 1980? Maybe 10-12 mpg?

|TJealnoz is right. They are releasing new cars with better consumption. I think a gas/electric hybrid is the way of the future. Hopefully the price will come down and reliability will improve in the next few years. Remember, 30 years ago Japanese cars were a considered small and unreliable here. Now most are considered quality products. I am sure over the next couple of decades, the same will hold true for hybrid & electric vehicles.
I lived for 6 years without a car myself as well. I could get to my job easier by train and did not think the expense was needed. The current location of my job, family, weather and availablility of public transportation have made it hard for me to live without one. I also help care for my elderly mother and I cannot get her in a Bob Trailer. A car is not exactly a luxury for most people.
Foriegn oil dependency is a good argument against high consumption vehicles. It is different from terrorism. I think the terrorism argument hurts the cause more than it helps. I guess we will have to respectfully disagree on that.

|I take the bus to work and drive my 66 Plymouth less than 1000 miles a year, which gets 8mpg, 10 if you baby it (I don't). My girlfriend puts less than 5000 miles a year on our 88 Volvo, which gets around 20. If I bought a 2005 Mustang it would probably be in 2015. I drive old cars and maintain them properly, instead of buying new every 3-5 years like most people. I just thought it was nice that Detroit was making some nice looking cars again.|
