Who is the coolest guy ever?mr_spin
Sep 18, 2002 1:04 PM
Many years ago, under the influence of a lot of beer, some friends got in a discussion about who was the coolest guy ever. A lot of names were mentioned. There were arguments. There were discussions. There was more beer.

Finally, we settled on a name: Ben Cartwright

Yep, that's right. The patriarch of the Cartwright family. Owner of the Ponderosa Ranch. Outlived three wives!

Okay, so he's not a real guy. But he may be the coolest guy ever. It's almost 20 years later and I'm ready to reconsider my vote. I'm looking for suggestions, and they don't have to be guys.

Who is the coolest guy/gal ever?

I thought of Sean Connery also. Also cool when he stopped wearing his toupee, grew a beard that came in white, packed on about 40 lbs and started playing roles in his age group. That's cool..

from Annie Hall, played by Christopher Walken.

"Can I confess something? I tell you this as an artist,I think you'll understand. Sometimes when I'm driving... on the road at night... I see two headlights coming toward me. Fast. I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on into the oncoming car. I can anticipate the explosion. The sound of shattering glass. The... flames rising out of the flowing gasoline."
Oh missed the best part.MXL02

Cool guys must have a sense of humor. Paul Newman gets my vote. Remember "The Sting?"

Clint Eastwood, In Good Bad & Ugly... remember whenrwbadley
Sep 18, 2002 4:00 PM
..his buddy (Tucko? the 'ugly') is getting 'interogated' and Lee Van Cleef (the 'bad' I guess)sits Clint down to a meal. Clint asks why he isn't getting the same treatment as his buddy, Van Cleef asks Clint "would you talk" Clint says "no, probably not" Van Cleef says he didn't think so.

This is just one of many great lines in those Eastwood westerns. I think because so few words are spoken in those films, the words that are uttered really build it up...

Just my thought,

A super-vague reference unless you're an anime lover. He was the villian of Ninja Scroll. Okay, fine...most of you wouldn't care for cartoons, but in my mind he's one of the most complete antisocial personalities created.

Bad guys are always more fun to watch.

Other honorable mentions:

Russell Crowe as the Gladiator
Wesley Snipes as Blade
006 from "007: Golden Eye"

Can we include comic book characters?

Raoul, from the original Fist of the North Star comics
Venom, from Spiderman (wish they made Venom bike jerseys!)
Zorro! nmSpinchick

The roles:
Cool Hand Luke
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The two "Hustler" movies

Personal Life
Races cars
Stays away from Hollywood - the "aloofness" factor
He's been married to one woman for 30 years - no sleeze factor here
PaulCL, you're a little off. Paul Newman has been married to Joanne Woodward for nearly 45 years! There is no question Paul Newman is a cool guy. But the coolest guy ever? Sure. Consider this. When he discovered his awful 1954 film "The Silver Chalice" was going to be broadcast on TV, he took out ads in the papers apologizing for his performance! Only a truly cool guy would do that. Even cooler, he founded The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for children (and their siblings) with cancer and other blood-related diseases. He also founded the Scott Newman Center, in memory of his son who died from a drug overdose. This includes the Rowdy Ridge Gang Camp, for families recovering from drug addiction or who are survivors of spousal abuse. And then there is all his Newman's Own food products. 100% of the after-tax profits go to charities. Also, you listed only a few of his great, great films. Here's more: Road to Perdition (2002) Verdict, The (1982) Absence of Malice (1981) (The 'H' series, including "Harper (1966)" which I didn't like) Hombre (1967) Hud (1963) Hustler, The (1961) From the Terrace (1960) (with Joanne Woodward) Young Philadelphians, The (1959) Left Handed Gun, The (1958) Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) Long, Hot Summer, The (1958) (with Joanne Woodward)mr_spin

I was merely wrong on one minor fact and I failed to include enough detail.

Cool is cool. Paul is cool.

Besides, I saw him in person once.

A cool guy would NEVER use the form "Kewl!"mr_spin

That sounds more like her cool guy than mine! At the end, she even admits it's an impossible standard.

To me, a cool guy is a guy who is so cool, he doesn't have to be cool. He just is. It can't really be quantified.

There's a very good film called "Dazed and Confused" in which Matthew McConaughey plays a guy who is truly cool. He hangs out with the cool people, he hangs out with the uncool people. He's so cool, he doesn't care about being cool, and everyone knows he is cool.
Wait a minute, sure he would, grzy does!scottfree

I second Bogart, Clark Gable and Errol Flynn have to be included as candidates.
Sep 20, 2002 8:11 AM
Bogart had too much of a mean streak to be the coolest guy ever.

I'd consider Gable for sure. After all, he was married to Carole Lombard, who I think is the coolest GAL ever. You have to be a pretty cool guy to snag the coolest gal.

Flynn? You must be joking. Oh man, you must be joking.
Steve McQueen, Ghandi and Sammy Baugh.Sintesi
