It's not about the gun.DougSloan

It's not about the gun. It's about personal liberty. :-)

See, you got it going again.

a gun does not equal personal liberty. it is a tool designed to shoot a projectile at high speed--mostly used for killing animals or people.

I totally forgot. "Personal liberty" and "freedom" mean only the freedom to do those things other people say I can do. Where was my head?

I won't comment on where your head is, but only a pure libertarian would say something like that. Freedom always comes with a price, like the old adage about not yelling fire in a theater.

Your actions may affect or infringe on others, so there must be rules. Et voila, you are no longer free, right? That's the price of living alongside others.

Only in your dreams can you find a place where you can experience true freedom and personal liberty. You can build yourself a compound somewhere and live off the land, but even in Shangri-La someone has to clean the toilets.

ALong with the shouting "FIre!" example you gave, not everyone may own firearms. Not everyone is permitted concealed carry permits.

Some really nutty stuff has happened in our country over the last 227 years. Are you willing to disarm the citiznry based your belief that NOTHING could happen in the next 227 years that may require the citizenry to overthrow the gov't? I hope it NEVER happens, but I am not will to disarm our society based on a misguided belief that somthing like that could never happen in the US.

Hey, you're right. Along the same lines, fire can break out at any moment. I think everyone should carry fire extinguishers, concealed or otherwise. And you should always carry a set of allen wrenches, too, just in case a bolt comes loose somewhere. God bless America.

I just said that guns do not equal personal liberty and freedom.

and you would be quite correct. the government will not be overthrown by force of arms, not in this day and age.
BV, a theoretical question. given command of a large number of militia groups, how would you propose to fight the national guard and overthrow the government? would it work? I'll grant you that it might. is there a better way? yes, vote wisely to ensure that you never need to.

No one can accurately predict what will be happening in this country in 20, 50, 100 years. To tell those who follow us that Gov't tyranny will NOT happen and then rremove their last means to resist (firearms) does them a huge disservice.

Can you guarantee that our Gov't will NEVER seek to oppress us?

no, I can't. and that's why you vote, isn't it? that's why there's the concept of civil disobedience, isn't there?
but you didn't answer the question. if the government were to turn tyrannical, a large proportion of the people would have to support it - that's the way things work in a democracy, I think. how would you overcome them, and the national guard, and all that?
Depends on how you define "oppress"ColnagoFE

Try not paying your taxes for a few years or starting a large scale marijuana growing operation. I don't think the government will take kindly to you and I imagine all the guns you have at your disposal won't do you much good at that point.
