| Blood | peloton Mar 14, 2002 6:20 AM | | I thought of something that I think is probably worth mentioning. I feel guilty just saying this, but during racing season the last thing I would think of doing is giving blood with worries of what it would do to my training and performance. (I'm slow even with a normal hemocrit!) I know I am not the only one who thinks this way from conversations I've had over the years. I am giving blood today though. For those of us out there who don't usually give during the season, maybe it's a good time of the year to do so. Never know when it might be you who needs it next. Remember that only 5% of people who are able to give blood actually do so.I figure if I give now, it will at least make me feel better in season when I'm feeling selfish. FWIW |
| Really mixed emotions about that... | cory Mar 14, 2002 8:47 AM | | Couple of members of my family, including my son, are alive today because of blood donors. I give as often as I can, but I do put it off before a major ride and used to avoid it before races back in the day.
What amazes me, though, is the number of people who don't do it AT ALL. I work in an office with 350-400 people, and when the Bloodmobile used to come to the parking lot, they'd take blood for half an hour and leave. The record was 12 people. |
| re: Blood | BikeViking Mar 14, 2002 12:12 PM | | Some of us in the military cannot donate anymore because we were stationed in Europe since 1981. Apparently, "Mad Cow" disease is the reason.
I like donating blood, but I won't be able to until they can test blood for this disease |
| I give in the off-season | lonefrontranger Mar 14, 2002 3:06 PM | | I always feel a little guilty about it during the race season tho. My rule is I don't give before Sept 1 or after March 1. I'm O+ (universal donor), so besides just being the right thing to do, I feel obligated. My (hydrated) hematocrit was tested at 48 recently, so I suppose I have some leeway.
And yes, I'm slow no matter what :-) |
| Yes; give blood! | look271 Mar 14, 2002 6:38 PM | | Any donation at any time is greatly appreciated. Until we come up with a viable alternative to using human blood, we need to give.I, sadly, can't give anymore for various reasons, but wish that I could. It is actually beneficial to you as it helps stimulate the body's immune system, as well as other systems. So don't do it during racing season-there's plenty of need all year. |
| I get weeded out by Lifesource restrictions. | Alex-in-Evanston Mar 15, 2002 10:20 AM | | You cannot donate blood within 24 months of having visited India; in effect since the Bubonic Plague outbreak in 1996. Since I'm there at least every other year, I won't be giving blood any time soon.
It's a shame, I used to look forward to giving blood and wearing my sticker with pride.
