Hey Peleton, and other Alpine Types,

The guy's on a roll. And just in time for Salt Lake City. First time an American's won a GS since
Phil Mahre. And in other news, my 19 year old son, who's going to school in the Selkirks
and spending my money, reported yesterday his first experience of jumping off 15 ft. cliffs into--
get this--armpit deep powder. So eat your hearts out, all you Colorado types, and head north!
No need to head north...Brooks

Utah has better snow than Colorado anyway. 7 major ski resorts within 30 minutes of Salt Lake airport, 2 more within an hour. Over 8 feet fell in Alta over Thanksgiving and it has been snowing most days since! Beautiful day Saturday! Can't wait for the Big Show in February. Of course, now the world will know that Utah has better skiing than Colorado.

Kind of sucks for bicycling now, though.

Good to hear someone is getting snow. We sure aren't. We're still skiing though, so can't complain too much.

It's great to see Bode winning. I watched him ski for years now, and I can tell you that he'll keep winning now that he has a taste of it. He's got an ability to let the skis run no matter what else might be going on. He actually had his hip touch the ground near the top of the first run yesterday in the GS!

Really too bad about what happened to Silvano Beltramatti a couple of days ago in the Super-G though. Word is a broken L-2 and paralysis from the waist down. It scares me to think about even. I can't believe how many horrible crashes that there have been already this season.

Will Picabo make it to Christmas without blowing up again?

Not if someone finally teaches her how to jump! She is skiing very well right now though. I think it's great how many genuine North American contenders (favorites?) are coming out right now.

Bode won the slalom yesterday! Talk about feast or famine!

I was skiing with some instructors and a coach about three years ago, down at Lake Tahoe. They
started talking about Picabo. She'd been out with them some weeks before, free skiing. They
talked about how absolutely crazy-aggressive she was, and one of them remarked that she
wouldn't last long on the world cup--this was after her 9 d'hill wins--due to her lack of caution.
Interestingly, but sadly, a few weeks later she blew out her knee and broke her leg, for the
second time,I believe. Their comments were prophetic. I wonder if she's learned that
prudence can be the better part of valour.
