Any amateur poets?DINOSAUR

Ater I retired in 1999 I was out riding my bike in the dead of winter after a rain storm, and I saw a robin hopping around on the road in front of me as I was climbing. He scooted up the road each I got close and finally he flew off into the woods. When I got home and was later watching the 5:00PM news I felt inspired to write a poem on this encounter. I've written several poems, one was published in a cycling club newsletter. A couple of others were posted on a cycling website. I don't know where this inspiration comes from. I think it might be from the fact I am just slowing down enough when I am on my bike and I see things I wouldn't if I were zipping by in my car. Perhaps its all that blood pumping through my brain. Just curious if anyone else dabbles in poetry or writing inspired by moving on a self propelled two wheel machine. My mom was an artist and I enjoy riding in the fall when all the colors are in their splendor. It reminds me of her paintings. Cycling means more to me than just exercise, it's seeing the world in a different perspective. Sort of a different demension that I forgot was there....

I can't ever think that clearly on the bike. Some passing abnormal thoughts will come and go, but I'm usually too tired, preoccupied, or hypoxic to think.

You might want to carry a small electronic voice memo recorder with you to capture all those novel thoughts. Let's see what you come up with.

I got all misty eyed one day about a month ago, after a particularly lovely afternoon spin. So
uncharacteristically I wrote some free verse and fired it off to my two best cycling buddies. The
one--a diehard literalist!--told me my poetry was incomprehensible, and the other, to stick
to sarcasm--it fits my personality better! So I've decided hereafter to keep my more delicate
sentiments in the closet! I'm just a jaded biological determinist anyway. Must've been a
temporary anomaly in my brain chemistry!

Yes, but interestingly enough, I rarely write about riding. That being said, I get some of my best stuff worked out while riding, either a difficult verse, or an approach to an idea. I also get some great ideas while riding.

I have been looking for a metaphor for riding that puts it in a context that non-riders could understand, but so far I have had little secuss.
