I know on a few automotive sites like or there are registered users that organize group buys to save money on a product. But, does it ever happen here? I'm just wondering.

From time to time there're some killer deal from oversea mail order. Is it ok if I organize some kind of oversea group buy to save on shipping? Everybody gets the deal + reduce shipping so it's win-win, I try to organize for local SF Bay Area only. Do people mind if I do that in this board from time to time? I guess I'll ask first just to be sure...

Thanks for your input. Sure the manufacturers make money and the end user would get a great deal on an awesome product but the only thing I could see a problem with is that by going with a group buy, it would be stepping on the toes of the manufacturer's dealers. Basically, they would be not able to compete against something that would be right around their cost or even less! Not to say that's any of my problem. I don't know if I could ever organize something like this because I assume it would take a lot of effort on the organizer's part. Since I'm married and have kids, it's kinda tough for me to partake on somthing like this. I'm actually looking into getting a set of Campy Scirocco wheels. If you know of anyone setting up this group buy, I'd be interested. Well, thanks again for your input!

I have organized a few "group" orders from overseas on the MBR site. Actually was pretty easy to do. I did this back in the spring of 02 when the EUR was about 75% of the US dollar so it was definately worth it, right now I think it's about even. I tried to only do this with people I knew from the board and required $$ up front. No $$, no order. Can be a lot of money out of your pocket if people back out at the last minute.
