Any good books out there to educate a newbie that wants to tackle a bike building project? Or is this knowledge passed from mechanic to mechanic in a ritual ceremony? I've got a friend who built bikes for a while but I need to educate myself a bit more. Thanks!

Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance is a good one. It will tell you just about everything about stripping or building a bike up. I could not quite figure out if you were looking to add parts to an existing frame or build a frame though from your question.

Zinn is good and so is Bicycling Magazine's Bicycle Maintenance Book.

I was looking to try (with an experienced mechanic friends help) to build up a bike from scratch. I feel like I'd learn a lot from doing so, as well as shopping for components that are recommended. Since I can't really express an opinion on them yet, seeing as I'm a newbie rider. Thanks all for the response.
