|What the hell is going on at Gitasport? I have tried to order a Merckx MX Leader through Gita from the shop that I work at and several other shops all across the U.S. but for some reason nobody can get anything from Gita unless they carry 5 or more of their frames. Understanably, all of the shops I have talked to have just said No... Does anyone have similar experiences??? Is there another way to get a Merckx?|

|I am not sure your bike shops are telling the whole story. My LBS told me he could get me Merckx bikes if I wanted one, I opted for a Pinarello. Both bikes are imported by Gita and he hasn't ordered 5 of those bikes. I guess if a bikeshop orders five bikes they become a dealer or something to that effect.
I am facing different kind of a problem with Gita. I have ordered a bike more than 2 months ago. I have yet to see it. It is possible that the shipment may be delayed as late as sept. If I had known this ahead of time I would have opted for my Kestrel EMS or Litespeed Tuscany instead.

|This is exactly how I found out about all of this mess. You might check with your bike shop to see if, in fact, the bike has been ordered and that Gita is processing the order... Good luck...keep me posted.|

|Cause I have given a $500 deposit to my bikeshop. I will talk to my LBS and see what's up. From what I understand, the LBS told me that the bike should be here in a "couple of weeks." He did order two other Pinarello frames and they did come. I saw a Prince in his shop and that's why I ordered a Pinarello.
Why don't you e-mail David @ GITA, he has been very prompt with his replies to me. He may be able to shed some light on your predicament. Here's the e-mail address:

A few months ago, I was told by Alesandro at Romeo Bicycle Shop (romeobicycleshop.com) that there's a 4 month wait for some Pinarello models. Romeo is based in Rome, Italy and I don't know if that's the case here in the states.
If you ordered a frame that wasn't in stock through GITA, then GITA had to request the frame from Pinarello in Treviso, Italy. Therein lies your problem.
As I understand it, Pinarello is a small operation compared to Colnago or Bianchi. So it will take some time for them to make a frame.

|I got mine from bikesport(i fax a bid sheet to about 5 shops and they were the only ones to call back, they did that day his name was Bevin) in they have had ad in every velonews for the past 10 years. It took about 4 months (Bevin followed up and I though i would take that long)and they deal with Merckx not Gita. They said I could get custom colors and crome, I got a straight factory one. I think that they only make mx leaders once a year about one week after I got mine they were all over the web shops(but in limited sizes nobody wants steel any more it's all hi-tech stuff, and you know MX is hi-tech steel!!!). great bike make sure you get the right size they have a very relaxed seat tube.

|This does not surprise me. We are talking about attitude here. I had a bad experience with Gita. Gita and the local bike shop delayed my bike a month arguing over who was going to pay for the shipping. Gita just got back from going to italy and visiting pinarello. So, it is quite possible that they might not have all sizes and paint schemes yet. The shops in italy have to wait several months and they order way ahead of Gita. They (gita) order in bulk and late compared to local italians. Plus, limited colors. Relationship with merckx could be quite different.|

dunno if you've managed to pick up a merckx yet but...
i picked up the alu team model back in '99 when i was in a shop in sweden...www.cykelcity.se.
obviously they don't go through gitasports but the selection when i was in the shop there was absolutely killer...they have had that domo team frame with the carbon stays since back in '99 - not offered in the states. they have every color imaginable. i walked out with the bike in yellow, with red decals. back in '99 it was only available in the GAN color of pearl white b/c gita was only bringing in that color.
check out the site and call them. the exchange rate right now is quite favorable. 10.78 Kronor/$1 vs. the 6-7 Kronor/$1 I paid for back then. and the price was still better back then compared with our domestic mailorder houses. they should not charge you the VAT. but you may be charged import duty. they also incidentally speak english quite well. they will answer the phone in swedish, but just ask if they can speak english.
anyhow good luck.
