|I found this pic off the cannondale website and thought everyone would get a kick out of it. That looks tough. I think I need to train a lot harder after looking at that.|

|I'm not entirely certain, but I'm 99% sure that's the Fillmore Street hill from the SF Grand Prix. If so, it's STUPID steep, like a 22% grade at the top--the sidewalks have stairs. I was lucky enough to be at a party for this year's race pretty much where that photo was taken.
One extra-fun moment was when this one alcoholic dude from a local bar at the base of the hill got all liquored up and beligerent and was slurring about how the racers were a bunch of pussies and how he could haul ass up the hill with no problem on his 60-pound drunk-guy special (the ubiquitous rusty cruiser with a six-pack cooler bungeed to the fender rack). He started taking bets and, after downing whatever rotgut shot someone bought him, proceeded up the hill.
A cheering crowd of about 50 watched as he hauled ass for about a half block before he keeled over and puked explosively. Ah, good times.

|but imagine having to ride it numerous times at race pace. Of course, my race pace up that hill would be about 3mph.|

|... appears to be making a swithcback...
A switchback effectively lessens the steepness of the grade but adds distance... if the road is wide enough... and your skills up to the task (you'd still need relatively good speed at each corner of the switchback where you'd face both a turn and the full grade for a half second or so).
Be the bike.

|I ride that hill as least twice during the week during the season. After you get enough reps in on that thing, when you hit a "steep" hill during a race that everyone is complaining about you're really not all that impressed.|| |
