Moving from many years of road cycling to indoor track cycling. Which decipline shall I try first and what will be the next step.

Most of the racing I've ever done has been the mass-start stuff. Just like racing crits, except faster, no turns, and no braking...

If you're just getting into track I'd start there.

Pursuits, Kilos, and sprints would be other recommendations in descending order.

I know here in San Diego you can race 3-5 mass-start races per meet. Good bang for your buck.

If you like strategy and don't like group crashes then try sprints. I've been trying to clear my summer schedule for several years in attempt to hit the local (well, semi-local) outdoor track. Whenever I do get there I'll start with either sprints or the drop and out event (forget the name, last one across the line each lap is out until the finish). The pursuits and hare/hound chases also look to be fun.
