The "Lance" factor in component pricing..Dave Hickey

I was just cruising Ebay and saw that the old Shimano/LOOK pedals(7401) are now selling for around $25.00 used. Just two years ago, they were selling for $100.00 in decent shape and $180 as NOS. These were Lance's pedal until he switched to the new Dura Ace. The old 7401 pedals were a 10 year old design anyway and probably never worth $100 used. It's amazing how many people buy something because Lance uses it and then STOP using it when he switches to another brand or model.

The fact that LA used those pedals, when they were out of production and otherwise less than ideal (heavy, etc.) sent a very strong message that they were, perhaps, the best pedal ever, and that he would risk sponsorship $ to use them. That's a powerful endorsement.

When he switched to the new pedal, he effectively said that the new pedal was better - so people switched to those.

It doesn't seem wrong, or unnatural to take Armstrong's word on something - particularly when he has nothing to gain from it.

One of the most famous moments of last year's Tour was of Lance almost crushing his remaining testicle after accidentally releasing from the "new and improved" pedals. Now that send a powerful message.

It was the cracked chainstay that warped just enough to cause the der. cable to slacken and the chain to skip.
I still use the 7401's !SPINDAWG

I love those pedals. I use them on one of my bikes. I think they are just as good as most of the pedals that are currently on the market. Thanks for the heads up on the pedals, I think i'll have to check those out. Would love to find a decent pair for my other bike.
