Can anyone recommend a good bike store in Boston close to down town?

Don't remember the name, but I browsed through killing time one day. Looked like a cool shop.

Hope that helps (Yeah, right. Could I be more vague?)

The one you mean is Back Bay Bicycles. They have actually moved. They are now on the corner of Commonwealth Ave. and Mass. Ave. (still near the Pru. though) They are kind of hidden with a garden level shop.

I was there on the first week that they moved in so that they were not set up yet. Their old shop was nice and the people were helpful.

The one mentioned below is close to town. But, there are a number of good shops that are not too far from downtown via the T.

What are you looking for?

Community Bicycle Supply on Tremont St. in the South End (its on the ground floor of the Castle Square Apt. Bldg.)
Why are you limited to just downtown, there are a lot good shops in the immediate Boston area (Cambridge, Allston, and Belmont).

I live in Bermuda and will be travelling to Boston on business in the near future and wanted to order a new bike to bring back with me. As I will mostly in the downtown area and not sure that I will have time to travel outside much.

I used to work at Back Bay Bikes in Boston when they were on Newbury Street, and if their new setup is anything like our old one, they won't have a ton in stock. Good advice was posted above saying to go just outside of Boston (Allston, Belmont). Community has a really nice staff but again their selection is a bit limited, that's why I recommend IBC or CycleLoft. At IBC ask for Derek, at CycleLoft ask for Ricky. I think both shops have pretty good websites so you can get an idea of what they carry before you go.

I live near Back Bay Bikes and have bought both my MTB and road bike from them... After much shopping around all over the MA area... somehow I always end up there. Worth a look, but I would look around too. If you can get there, Quad Cycles in Arlington is worth a visit as is Wheelworks.

If you're coming to Boston anytime soon, I recommend a very warm coat. We are having a high around 5 degrees today.
