|Shop Report: Stoton Cycle||Asiago|
Jan 3, 2004 7:41 AM
|Stoton Cycle in Stoughton, WI is my home shop. It's a small shop owned by Phil Caravello. Phil is the owner, manager, mechanic and sales guy. That's right, he's the only employee! The shop's motto: "If it's in stock, we've got it!"
Phil doesn't carry a lot of stock, but he has all of the necessities and more. If you need something odd though, he'll have it within a couple of days.
The beauty of Stoton Cycle though is the customer service. Phil's not my LBS owner, he's a friend. We ride together a lot. He sponsors both the Stoton Velo Club and the Great Dane Velo Club. Phil organizes Sunday coffee rides all year long (weather permitting) and two weekday rides during the season (April-September).
So, for this shop report I thought I'd post a ride report along with it, Phil's annual New Year's Day Ride. The ride starts at noon with a pot-luck in the shop afterwards (Phil provides the tables, electricity for the crock pots and the beer). Matt and I met early for a pre-ride warm-up.

|It was a little early for Phil, seen here scampering up the back stairs behind the building. Phil's apartment is in the same building as his bike shop.|

|By the time Matt and I got back to the shop one or two bikes at the back door revealed some others had shown up.|

|The balmy weather brought everybody out! It was about 39 degrees at noon and that warm weather produced 41 participants, a ride record!|

|The big group was off for the ride with the thought of a good meal at the end...|

|The ride traditionally leaves the shop in Stoughton, rides around Lake Kegonsa and then returns to the shop.|

|It was a nice pace for the group. Not too slow, not too fast. The Great Dane Velo Club guys (elite team) showed their class by setting a great club pace.|

|There's Phil, center of the picture in the black stocking cap! I should also mention, Phil has organized a TT through the Wisport series, any proceeds after costs are donated to charity.|

|Last photo shows a few of the '04 bikes Phil is beginning to get built for the showroom floor.
I just want to say thank to Phil for having such a great shop. It's not big or glamorous, but it's the best. I can get anything I need, plus a good friend and riding buddy who does an extraordinary amount for the cycling community.

|I'm from Milwaukee and the Wisport 40k time trial he sponsors is a well run event that I've done several times. never been to his shop tho'.
New Years day was great riding weather in Wisconsin. Our team did 46 miles partly along Lake Michigan. A good hard ride does wonders for a hangover!

|All the rides are great. The Sunday Coffee ride is open to anyone, though only 3 or 4 of us ride from stoughton this time of year. The ride goes all winter, weather permitting. Always a good idea to call Phil at the shop on Saturday to see what the scoop is (608) 877-1134. The ride leaves the shop at 8am. Be wary, if Phil is running late (which is often), they can end up riding rather quickly. For this reason, I usually meet them on the way. If you are interested in doing the ride but maybe not riding phil speed, you can shoot me an email and we can set up a time to meet on the road and meet Phil et al on the road. We're back in Stoughton by noon, with usually an hour or so at the coffee shop.
